Maverick Startups Application
Maverick Startups is about applying the scientific method to the startup process. In this class you will test your assumptions about an idea for a product or service and use the information to create a business model that is more likely to succeed in the market place.
During the semester, the working team will get their hands dirty talking to customers, partners, competitors as they encounter the chaos and uncertainty of how a startup actually works. Working in teams, the members will learn how to turn a great idea into a great company. They will learn how to use a business model to brainstorm each part of a company and customer development to get out of the classroom to see whether anyone other than you would want/use your product. Finally, the team will see how agile development can help them to rapidly iterate their product to build something customers will use and buy.
The class involves significant work, including extensive contact with mentors, potential customers, suppliers, and key partners. Entrepreneurs commit 10 hours per week to the Lean LaunchPad process.
You may apply with other students, or as part of an entrepreneurial team. Interdisciplinary teams are preferred, with between 2-4 students per team. We look for well-rounded teams with dedication, passion and vision for a business idea that would benefit from learning and mentoring in advance of funding. Teams should be excited by the challenge of "getting out of the building" to talk to customers and working on their business.
You may also apply individually. Students who apply individually will form a team with 2 or 3 other students. Students will pitch their ideas to each other and the new team will select the one that has the best chance of being developed over the semester. Because of this, we can’t guarantee the business you build will be your own idea if you apply individually.
